Liverpool upset Fulham in a semi-final

The Reds beat Fulham this Wednesday evening (2-1) and will have to manage the return match to hope to qualify for the final.

Liverpool, trailing at the break, overthrew Fulham (2-1) thanks to their youth and their substitutes, Wednesday at Anfield in the semi-final first leg of the League Cup, a competition that the Reds won for the ninth and last time in 2022.

The Mersey club will travel to London on Wednesday January 24 in a strong position to reach the final, scheduled a month later against Chelsea or Middlesbrough, a D2 team who emerged victorious in the first leg (1-0) on Tuesday in front of their audience.

Liverpool supporters had doubts at half-time when Fulham, despite their 32% possession of the ball and their 4 shots, led against all expectations. The Cottagers exploited the lack of impact from the opposing midfielder and then the lack of sharpness from the defenders, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté in particular, to strike through Willian (19th, 0-1). They also had a wasted 2-0 ball in the 63rd minute.

The Reds’ attack, deprived of Mohamed Salah who had left for the CAN, however woke up at the end of the game with the successful and eager entry of Darwin Nunez, a decisive double passer in the space of three minutes. The Uruguayan striker first beat Curtis Jones, a 22-year-old midfielder born in Liverpool, whose deflected shot hit the mark (68th, 1-1). Then he served behind Cody Gakpo (70th, 2-1), author of his fourth goal in four League Cup matches.
