Players of the Korean national badminton team, including Ahn Se-young, are singing the marching song ahead of the first international competition of the season.
The stage is the 2024 Malaysia Open, which opens in Kuala Lumpur on the 9th and runs until the 14th. The world’s top ranked players will participate in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 series special event.
Starting with this competition, a fierce Olympic race will be held between leading stars from each country aiming for the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics (July 26-August 11).
Ahead of the tournament, Kim Hak-gyun, the Korean team’s general manager, said in a phone call with Sports Seoul, “We have to go there under tension, but our players seem more relaxed than they were at the beginning of last year. Four competitions are scheduled for this month, but aces such as Ahn Se-young and Seo Seung-jae are scheduled to participate in only the first two competitions. “I will achieve good results,” he said.
He continued, “I think Seyoung is the only one who feels pressure and burden. Through dialogue, we prepare for the All England Open (March) and the Olympics (July-August). He said, ‘Don’t feel pressured.’ “I know it, but I said, ‘It’s not easy,’” he said, also conveying his mood.
Ahn Se-young, who suffered a serious right knee injury during the women’s singles final at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games in October last year, was unable to return to normal condition after going through rehabilitation, and stopped in the semifinals of the women’s singles at the BWF World Finals in mid-December.
However, after taking a vacation, he rested mentally and physically, and prepared for the first competition of the season through the national team’s training camp in Mungyeong at the end of the year and early in the new year.
World No. 1 Ahn Se-young was assigned the No. 1 seed at this Malaysia Open, while China’s No. 2 Chen Yu-peyu (26), No. 3 Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi (27), and No. 4 Tai Tzu-ying (30) of Taiwan are all ranked No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. They will participate as the 3rd and 4th seeds, respectively.
Therefore, it appears that it will be a good opportunity to get a glimpse of the performance of the so-called ‘Big 4’ at the beginning of the new year.
In men’s doubles, Seung-jae Seo (27, Samsung Life Insurance) and Min-hyuk Kang (25, Samsung Life Insurance), last year’s world champions and ranked third in the world, will participate as the 6th seeds. Kim Won-ho (25, Samsung Life Insurance) will team up with Na Seong-seung (25, Gimcheon City Hall) for the first time.
In women’s doubles, world 2nd place Lee So-hee (30, Incheon International Airport) – Baek Hana (24, MG Saemaeul Geumgo), 3rd place Kim So-young (32, Incheon International Airport) – Gong Hee-yong (27, Jeonbuk Bank), 11th place Kim Hye-jeong (26) ·Samsung Life Insurance) – 4 teams, including Jeong Na-eun (24, Hwasun County Office), 25th place Shin Seung-chan (30, Incheon International Airport) – Lee Yu-rim (24, Samsung Life Insurance), etc. will participate.
In mixed doubles, world No. 3 Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong (29, Incheon International Airport) and No. 7 Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun will challenge for their first championship of the season.
