Kevin Durant is one of, if not the, best scorer of all time, but his name is almost never mentioned in the GOAT debate. Durant himself is annoyed by this, but knows the reason for it.
In an interview with Duane Rankin (Arizona Republic), Durant spoke about this fact. “Why shouldn’t I be part of this discussion?” That’s the question you need to ask. Why not? What haven’t I achieved in contrast to the others?”
Durant asked these questions with regard to the GOAT debate and then gave the answers himself. “Because I went to the Warriors”. It is the time in which Durant won his only two titles, in 2017 and 2018 KD was awarded the Finals MVP award and not Stephen Curry, who according to Shaquille O’Neal is also in the discussion for the best player of all time should.
Durant also won the MVP award in 2014 and has now won three gold medals with Team USA, as well as being named to the NBA’s anniversary team with the best 75 players of all time. With 27.3 points per game, his scoring average is even better than that of LeBron James (27.1), only Michael Jordan (30.12 PPG), Wilt Chamberlain (30.07 PPG) and Elgin Baylor (27.36 PPG) are better with at least 500 appearances.
With a total of 27,913 points scored, Durant is in tenth place in the all-time scoring list, and the 35-year-old may overtake Carmelo Anthony (28,289) and Shaquille O’Neal (28,596), who are ahead of him, this season.
However, Durant celebrated his greatest successes with the Warriors, who had already won a title before his arrival in 2016 and broke the record for most wins in a season the year before (73-9). Golden State around Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala is considered possibly the best team of all time, otherwise Durant only reached the finals in 2012 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he lost to the Big Three of the Miami Heat around LeBron James (1- 4).
