Bernstein lived with his family in Hoppegarten (Märkisch-Oderland), just beyond Berlin’s eastern city limits.

The representatives of professional football paid tribute to the deceased Hertha president in Frankfurt on Tuesday. “I had even prepared for once, but I don’t feel capable of doing so,” said DFL supervisory board chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke at the start of the German Football League’s New Year’s reception. He couldn’t just go back to business as usual. After the news from Berlin, the DFL leadership also considered canceling the traditional event, said Watzke. The end of the event was brought forward to 6:30 p.m.

Second division club Hertha BSC announced this morning that Bernstein had died at the age of 43. He had been personally and friendly with Bernstein “for several years,” said Watzke and spoke of an unbelievable tragedy. “I believe that our good wishes go to his partner and daughter – but also to all Herthaners who have lost their president,” said Watzke.
