Joy Beune surprisingly won the 3,000 meters at the World Cup competition in Salt Lake City on Friday. The Dutch woman trumped her compatriots Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud with a top time and recorded her first victory ever over the distance.

Beune set a personal record with 3.56.86 and was a full second faster than number two Schouten (3.58.20). Groenewoud, who became European champion in the 3,000 meters three weeks ago, was not involved at all and finished fourth behind the Canadian Valérie Maltais (4.00.92).

For the 24-year-old Beune it is the first World Cup victory of her career. At the National Championships distances last month in Heerenveen, she finished fourth behind Schouten, Groenewoud and Elisa Dul in the 3,000 meters.

Beune surprised at the same tournament with a victory in the 1,500 meters. That was a boost for the Dutchwoman at the time, who was then mainly known for her clumsy disqualifications in the team pursuit.

Sanne In ‘t Hof also broke a personal record by riding the 3 kilometers in a time of 4:01.03. The Frisian, who rode the 5 kilometers at the Olympic Games two years ago, finished in fifth place. Dul finished eighth in 4.02.04.

Schouten and Groenwoud can still take revenge on the team pursuit and the mass start. The team pursuit will be held on Saturday and the mass start on Sunday. Schouten and Groenewoud, together with Beune, form the selection for the team pursuit. Groenewoud will also race the 1,500 meters on Saturday.
