Joselu: Real Madrid’s Surprise Striker Success

Joselu arrived at Real Madrid in the summer to replace not so much Benzema, who left for football in Saudi Arabia, but rather Mariano, to play the role of a striker raised in the youth team who takes advantage of his minutes when necessary. He assumed that role with sportsmanship from the beginning: “We all know Benzema’s level, I come to do a different type of work. I am a more physical player and I know what I can contribute,” he said in his presentation, back in June 2023.

And he is more than fulfilling that premise: he already has 10 goals and 3 assists in just 1,217 minutes, averaging a goal every 122 minutes and participating in a goal every 94′. Against Atleti he scored again, scoring 4-3 (the ball touched Savic before going in, but Joselu had previously shot and the referee assigned the goal to the Real Madrid player on the scoresheet).

Ancelotti had to receive questions at the beginning of the course about the role he was going to be given, it being clear that the starters were and continue to be Vinicius and Rodrygo. He showed confidence: “It gives us something we didn’t have in years past.” And he is living up to the striker: he has had minutes in all the games this season except one… and it was due to suffering from the flu.
