Selection of 2nd year students Kim Yun-hoo and Choi Jae-sang

[스포츠서울ㅣ김기원기자] Players from Jeongeup City’s Jeongju High School badminton club (hereinafter referred to as Jeongju High School), which was founded in June last year, were selected for the junior national team, becoming an example of the sports talent development support project promoted by Jeongeup City.

The players selected for the junior national team are Kim Yun-hoo (2nd year) and Choi Jae-sang (2nd year). The two players will leave for Jeju to participate in winter camp training hosted by the Korea Badminton Association for 18 days from the 8th to the 25th.

In Jeongeup, there are schools with badminton clubs, such as Jeongeup-dong Elementary School and Jeongeup Middle School, but there is no local high school sports department, so excellent players in the area had to go to other areas such as Jeonju and Gunsan.

The city, which was concerned about preventing the outflow of top talent, contributed to the establishment of the badminton club at Jeongju High School with full support last year. As a result, an environment was created where excellent players could exercise to their heart’s content, and more players from other regions were able to advance to higher education.

Jeong High School currently consists of 7 second-year students and 6 students scheduled to enter first year. Among them, 8 students came from other regions and were recruited as excellent players at the junior national team (standing team) level. In addition, Jeongju High School, led by coach Kang Myeong-won, a former national team member and former badminton coach at Wonkwang University, is creating an optimal environment to revitalize elite sports and is being reborn as a national badminton elite.

Accordingly, on the 4th, Mayor Lee Hak-soo invited the Jeongju High School players, the president of the Badminton Association, and officials from the city’s sports promotion office to a luncheon and encouraged them.

Jeongeup Mayor Lee Hak-soo said, “The fact that the Jeongju High School badminton team was selected to the junior national team just one year after its founding is a shining result of the team’s hard training and passion for badminton.” He added, “The city administration and the school will continue to cooperate and show interest in nurturing badminton elites in the future.” “We will do our best to continue providing support,” he said.
