Jean-David Bouchard made history for the Fermont judo club this weekend during the U18 Elite National Championships, by winning the title of Canadian champion in his category.

In an interview with CFMF radio, the gold medalist said he felt a lot of pride at the end of this competition, which he won thanks to his efforts and training.

This is the first time that a gold medal has been won by a judo athlete from Fermont, in an elite national championship. Jean-David Bouchard was on his second participation in this event. In 2022, still in Alberta, he received the title of vice-champion, or the silver medal, in his category.

The Elite Championships bring together the eight best athletes in the country by category. The Fermont athlete fought in the U18 +90kg category.

With his title of Canadian champion, Jean-David earns a place to represent Canada at the next Pan American Cadet Championships which will take place from April 18 to 21 in Brazil. One more challenge for the young athlete, who has already represented his city and his country abroad before:

Jean-David Bouchard was not the only representative of Fermont to have been selected for the Elite Championships. William Power also took part in the Senior U21 (+100kg), with a long fight which allowed him, according to coach Danny Bouchard, to gain experience and evolve for future competitions.

The Fermont judo club has three more black belts

Last December, three athletes from the Fermont judo club obtained their black belt during a grading event: William Power, Jean-David Bouchard and Raphaël Gagnon.

They were accompanied by their coaches, Danny Bouchard and Shannon Power.
