Jared Goff’s Journey to the NFC Championship Game: From Childhood 49ers Fan to Facing His Hometown Team

The Detroit Lions advanced to their first NFC Championship Game in more than 30 years, and much of their success is due to quarterback Jared Goff’s work distributing the ball to his skill players.

The Detroit quarterback’s role will be significant in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers because he is a native of the North Bay area. Goff grew up in Novato, California, about 28 miles away from San Francisco, and was a Niners fan during his youth.

Before turning pro, Goff played at the high school level with the Marin Catholic Wildcats in Kentfield and then made his mark with the California Golden Bears at the collegiate level.

Such was his bond with the Gambus franchise that the number 16, which he has worn since he was recruited by the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 with the first overall pick, is in honor of the legendary Joe Montana.

Another iconic moment of his fandom for the San Francisco franchise was when the Niners chose Alex Smith with the first overall pick in the 2005 draft instead of Aaron Rodgers. At the age of ten, a young Goff was upset because his team did not recruit the California graduate instead of the Utah graduate.

Now, Goff must overcome what was once the team of his loves to play in the Super Bowl for the second time in his career. His first participation is remembered as one of the worst. Both the Rams and the New England Patriots came into the game with two of the best offenses of the year, but the result was 13-3 in favor of Tom Brady’s team.

Goff has played nine games against the 49ers, eight as part of the Rams and one with the Lions. Of them, only four have been played at Levi’s Stadium; The balance is two wins (2017 and 2018) and two losses (2019 and 2020) and in each of them he has thrown two or more touchdown passes.

Goff’s only matchup as a member of the Lions against the Niners occurred in the 2021 season. San Francisco beat Detroit 41-31, but the quarterback completed 38 throws for 338 yards and three touchdowns.
