Ivan Leko Takes the Reins at Standard Liège, Makes Big Decisions on Players

It was this Friday morning that Ivan Leko met his staff and the group. The Croatian gave his first training session before being officially presented to the press. “I’m going to take the time to get to know everyone in the coming days,” said the 45-year-old. Before the session, Leko spoke with some players including Noah Ohio.

Ivan Leko also got to know his new staff.

After giving a speech in the privacy of the locker room, Leko discovered the Academy training ground and gave his first instructions. For more than an hour, the new mentor of Rouches simply directed everything in the session, giving a lot of voice and explaining in detail what he expected from his players. Leko also showed that he could be strict.

After a warm-up during which he was in observation, Ivan Leko took action for more than an hour.

During the session, Leko took the time to talk a little with Cihan Canak, Isaac Price and William Balikwisha, players lacking playing time and above all joy of life in recent months. “It is important to me that everyone arrives at training with a smile,” added Leko, repeating comments made by Ronny Deila a year and a half ago.

Kawabe, Sowah and Djenepo will join the group in Marbella

This Saturday morning, at around 6 a.m., the Standardmen will fly to Marbella. Logically, Ivan Leko should have 27 to 29 players under his command. The young Epolo, Poitoux, Lawrence, Sahabo, Ghalidi and Mawete will be on the trip. Absent Thursday and Friday, Hayao Kawabe, Kawal Sowah, and Moussa Djenepo received authorization to join the group in Marbella after returning to Japan, Ghana and Mali respectively. Injured and undergoing rehabilitation in Brighton, Steven Alzate will not be present. That leaves the Isaac Hayden case. We know, the Englishman could return to Newcastle. “Both Brighton and Newcastle have a clause to bring back Hayden and Alzate. Steven is in Brighton for treatment but is expected in Liège after the course. For Hayden, we are in discussions with the Magpies and he may not return,” Fergal Harkin said.

Utrecht wants Ohio on loan

In difficulty this season, Noah Ohio could leave Sclessin this winter. As we indicated a few weeks ago, Genoa was looking into its file within the framework of a six-month loan with an option to purchase. But another team has entered the dance, these are the Dutch from Utrecht who also wish to obtain the loan from Jong Oranje. At Standard, we say that Ohio will take the road to Marbella this Saturday while in the player’s entourage, certain people, who would try to interfere in the deal, are talking about an agreement between Ohio and the Batavian club. Things could therefore change further in the coming weeks.
