Inflation rebounds to 4.9 percent in the first half of January – El Sol de México

2024 began with a slight rebound in inflation, since at the end of the first half of January this indicator reached a level of 4.90 percent, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

In this way, five consecutive fortnights were accumulated with inflation on the rise. In addition, this is the highest level since the second half of June 2022, when the indicator reached 4.93 percent.

According to Inegi, inflation in the first half of January was a consequence of an annual growth of 20.69 percent in the cost of fruits and vegetables.

In particular, the price of tomato, onion, and green tomato stood out, which had increases of between 7.16 and 25.64 percent in the reference period.

Likewise, there was an increase in the cost of food prepared in inns, taquerias, torterías, loncherías and restaurants.

The price increase was more visible in entities such as Guerrero, Chiapas, Puebla, Oaxaca and Tlaxcala, according to Inegi headed by Graciela Márquez Colín.

The data reported by the organization were above the projections of analysts consulted by Citibanamex, who expected inflation for the first half of January to be 4.86 percent.
