Inauguration of San Lorenzo Sports Center: The Largest Municipal Sports Facility in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, accompanied by the Councilor for Sports, Carla Campoamor, inaugurated this Saturday the sports center Saint Lawrencewhich has an area of ​​more than 115,000 square meters dedicated to 15 sports disciplinesbecoming the largest municipal facility dedicated to sports.

The project of the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sports (IMD), which had an investment of close to three million euros, represents a substantial expansion of the sports offer in the city. The space houses the practice of alternative sports such as archery, crossfit, ‘pum track’ and trial trials, along with others such as volleyball, soccer and beach tennis, calisthenics and basketball.

The mayor has highlighted “the great importance” of the inauguration of this sports center. “From an urban planning point of view, these facilities are an example of revitalization of an urban space that had lost its original use. and that, now, acquires not only a new use, but also brings new value to the city, expanding opportunities for sports practice and helping to improve people’s lives.

Darias has also highlighted that “this sports center is a joint effort between the areas of Sports and Planning, Urban Development and Housing, which have created a space that is already a reference in the Canary Islands for the practice of alternative sports.”

Also present at the event were the Councilor for Planning, Urban Development and Housing, Mauricio Roque, the Councilor for the Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya District, Esther Martín; and the Sports Councilor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero.

Located in a natural environment, the San Lorenzo Sports Center respects the special orography of the place, promoting its landscape and natural value, and combining sports uses with places of leisure and rest for the whole family.

This new sports infrastructure responds to the commitment of this municipal government to the residents of San Lorenzo, and reconverts the land of the old Martinón dam into a park with excellent features, designed with the neighborhood consensus and which also aims act in the field of health and physical activity.

Installation features

70% of the land it occupies is within the Pino Santo Protected Landscape, so the actions have been designed with minimal construction impact. The only spaces subject to minimal urban intervention are those reserved for the 1,110 square meter soccer field with an artificial grass finish and the four basketball baskets with a surface area of ​​483 square meters.

The San Lorenzo Sports Center also has a 2,775 square meter beach sand floor that allows two beach volleyball courts, one beach soccer court, and some obstacles for CrossFit training to be used simultaneously.

At the end of this first surface and at one of the vertices of the enclosure is a space for practicing calisthenics, a sport with increasing demand. To all this, we must add a space for archery made up of 12 lanes 4 meters thick.

The other part of the space is a surface for bicycles and electric trial motorcycles, and a ‘pump track’ for bicycles and skateboards with different levels. There are several circuits depending on the level of each one, even with a circuit for children or initiation to practice the inertia technique. This circuit complies with all the regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation to host national and international competitions.

In terms of equipment, there are storage spaces, bathrooms and classrooms, an adapted bathroom and a flexible space with several sports classrooms, a car park with 50 spaces to facilitate access for users and two for people with reduced mobility.

Olympic Forest

The surroundings of the San Lorenzo Sports Park include a large part of the more than 3,000 trees and plants included in the future Olympic Forest that will cover the neighborhoods of San Lorenzo and El Zardo. The City Council joined this initiative, promoted together with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and sponsored by Santander Bank, with a project from the area of ​​Urban Planning and Housing to continue promoting the development of green and environmentally friendly projects in the city. the objective of having a space for sports practice aligned with the 2030 Agenda to meet climate requirements.
