“I’m really relieved that it’s not that serious, even though I hurt everywhere,” breathes Shiffrin

The American skier fell heavily on the first descent of Cortina d’Ampezzo on Friday.

The American Mikaela Shiffrin, victim of a heavy fall in the first descent of Cortina d’Ampezzo on Friday, expressed her relief at not being injured. “I want to thank you for your support and best wishes for your recovery. For the moment, we will see what happens day by day.she wrote on her X account (formerly Twitter). “I’m really relieved that it’s not that serious, even though I hurt everywhere.”continued the five-time World Cup winner and overall leader.

She clarified that she would not start the two other races on the program for the Cortina stage, a second descent on Saturday and a super-G on Sunday, nor the giant slalom of Kronplatz (Italy) on Tuesday. “Beyond this meeting, it’s still difficult to say (in which races she will participate). I need a little time with my team to digest what happened.”she concluded.

Violent fall

Shiffrin, already victorious seven times this winter, made a mistake on one of the first difficulties of the course, a left curve preceded by a jump which unbalanced her. The American, who was competing in only her second downhill of the winter, violently hit the protective nets. After intervention by the rescuers, she managed to stand up and left the track walking, but leaning on her poles and without putting her left leg on the ground. The American Ski Federation then indicated in the afternoon that “the anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament (of the left knee) are intact”.

Shiffrin is 340 points ahead of Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami in the general classification, 2nd in the downhill won on Friday by Austrian Stephanie Venier.
