Homenchenko and his dream at Oviedo: “When we found out about the signing, my family and I were excited”

Santiago Homenchenko is immersed in preparing for the pre-Olympic, an event that the Uruguayan under-23 team wants to take advantage of to be in the Paris Games next summer. But between preparations under the command of Marcelo Bielsa, the coach, the new Oviedo midfielder found time to talk about his recent move to the Carbayón team. “When we found out about the signing, my family and I were excited. I’m leaving Peñarol happy because I left everything,” the midfielder explained to Sport 890.

“My work group did not make me dizzy with things that could affect me,” he commented on the negotiations led by Jesús Martínez for his arrival, although he admitted that “Oviedo’s treatment was always formal.”

The young Uruguayan player, 20 years old, joined Club Atlético Peñarol in 2021, the team in which he finished his youth development. Homenchenko, who made his professional debut on September 18, 2022 at the age of 19 in the Clausura Tournament, has played a total of 30 games with Peñarol’s first team and has also had a presence in the youth ranks of the Uruguayan national team.

Last June, the midfielder was proclaimed winner of the U-20 World Cup with Uruguay for the first time in its history. Now, and due to his good performances, he is concentrated with the under-23 team, which from January 20 will compete in the South American Under-23 Pre-Olympic Tournament in Venezuela, so his incorporation into the blue discipline will not be immediate: it will be necessary wait until February.
