Hoffenheim Frustrated After Late Defeat: Wout Weghorst Questions Team’s Mentality

Hoffenheim’s anger was noticeable in the interviews after the late 2-3 defeat in Freiburg. Wout Weghorst struggled with repeated mistakes and questioned the team’s mentality.

Hoffenheim got a whopping 18 points from the first nine games. But since matchday 10, TSG has been in a negative trend: the Kraichgauers have only collected six points from the last nine games.

We can’t talk about the same mistakes over and over again.

The reasons for the poor yield are well known, but similar mistakes keep repeating themselves. “There’s a lot of quality in our team, but then you have to improve various things. We can’t keep talking about the same mistakes,” explained a visibly annoyed Wout Weghorst in the “Sky” interview after the late 2-3 defeat in Freiburg.

The Dutchman cited the emergence of the third and decisive goal as symbolic of the lack of improvement mentioned. Andrej Kramaric took a little too long on a counterattack and lost the ball to Maximilian Eggestein in midfield.

However, the Freiburg midfielder also leaned on himself when he won the ball and pushed Kramaric down, so that Pellegrino Mattarazzo, among others, felt disadvantaged after the final whistle: “It’s a very clear foul. Not intervening in this situation is incomprehensible to me,” said the TSG -Trainer.

Weghorst is annoyed by “too many contacts”

While the coach and Kramaric were upset, Weghorst talked more about what he saw as the Croat’s sideways shift being too slow. “I think it’s crazy that we’re even in a situation like this, even talking about it,” explained the 31-year-old and continued: “We have one more man. We talk all the time about the fact that we need too many contacts, that we have to shift the game more quickly. The entire right side is open with Bebou. Play the ball.”

In addition to the “too slow” game, Hoffenheim suffered a defensive lapse in the Europa Park Stadium, as has so often been the case this season. This time Florian Grillitsch lost the ball in the build-up game, which hit the net a short time later to make it 0-2.

Hoffenheim doesn’t defend well after losing the ball

But why can’t Hoffenheim get the weaknesses that have already been identified under control? For Weghorst it is obviously also a question of mentality. “If you want something, there is still a difference whether you really want something. No matter what, do everything with 100 percent towards the goal. I think we can absolutely take a step further with our team,” said the striker.

Nevertheless: The Kraichgauer team acted clearly improved in the second half compared to the first 45 minutes and temporarily made up for a two-goal deficit. In the end, despite having the majority after Manuel Gulde was sent off, it wasn’t even enough to win a point because Hoffenheim didn’t defend well after the controversial scene when Kramaric lost the ball – a well-known problem that costs points.
