There is great sympathy following the death of Kay Bernstein. At the start of the second half of the season, fans from some second division clubs remember the late president of Hertha BSC. A large funeral march is planned for Sunday in Berlin.
It was almost 48 years ago that Hertha BSC played Karlsruher SC on the first matchday of the 1976/77 Bundesliga season. Many fans made their way to Baden from Berlin.
They were amazed when they were warmly welcomed in Karlsruhe on August 14th. Hertha won the game 3-0 – and yet everyone celebrated together in many bars afterwards. It was the beginning of an intense and special fan friendship.
How deeply connected this is was shown again on Friday. Before KSC’s second division home game against VfL Osnabrück, the Karlsruhe supporters commemorated Hertha President Kay Bernstein, who died at the age of just 43, with a minute’s silence and a choreography.
“The sadness was good for every soul,” says the KSC captain
After the game, which KSC won 2-1, captain Jerome Gondorf remembered the late Hertha boss. The midfielder said that no one in the world would wish to die so early. “I know what it means to our fans to be with Hertha BSC, and I know that there were very close connections with Mr. Bernstein.” Giving time to the sadness before kick-off “did every soul here good.”

Kay Bernstein was also remembered in Hamburg, where 1. FC Kaiserslautern played FC St. Pauli on Saturday afternoon. While both teams were warming up, a large picture of the late Hertha president could be seen on the video screen. There was applause from the stands. St. Pauli ultimately won 2-0 (1-0).

In addition to the game in Hamburg, there were two more games on Saturday. 1. FC Nürnberg had a perfect start to the second half of the season at home. The FCN won against Hansa Rostock 3-0 (2.0) – and thus ruined the debut of the new Hansa coach Mersad Selimbegovic. Can Uzun (15th and 36th) and Jens Castrop (51st) scored the goals. However, SV Elversberg and Hannover 96 separated 2:2 (0:1). Jannik Rochelt (57th) and Frederik Jäckel (60th) scored for Elversberg, while Nicolo Tresoldi scored a brace for Hannover (8th and 69th).
Funeral march in Berlin
With a view to the start of the second half of the season for Hertha, who will host Fortuna Düsseldorf at home on Sunday, the Berlin ultras Harlequins 98 have invited people to a funeral march for the deceased Hertha president. On Sunday at 10 a.m., the fans of the second division team want to gather at Theodor-Heuss-Platz in the west of the capital and then walk together to the Olympic Stadium.

“This day will be a difficult journey for all of us and preparing for it is not an everyday occurrence. We would like to point out that this is a mourning march and not a fan march and should be carried out respectfully and appropriately. Therefore, avoid alcoholic drinks and any form of pyrotechnics. Guests from other fan scenes will also take part in this funeral march, and this must also be respected. In memory of Kay, let us go to the Olympic Stadium and pay our last respects to him.
