The hard core of Ajax has made it clear in a statement that it supports Marc Overmars. On Tuesday evening, his spokesperson Frank Neervoort confirmed to De Telegraaf that the fifty-year-old manager will no longer be allowed to perform his current position as technical director of Royal Antwerp for the time being.

Overmars has been told that his national suspension due to inappropriate behavior (during his time at Ajax) will be implemented worldwide with immediate effect. The news was reported earlier in the day by the NRC.

Reaction of hard core Ajax
The hard core of Ajax supports their former director of football affairs via Instagram Stories with a clear message. “We support you,” writes Ultras Amsterdam, which partly consists of the former Vak 410.

Ajax Noord B, sections 112 to 116, shares a photo of an earlier atmospheric campaign in which support was expressed for Overmars. “Marc one of us! Overmars forever Ajax!”, two banners could be read at the time.

Overmars had to leave Ajax in February 2022 due to inappropriate behavior. Just under two months later, Ajax’s hard core argued in vain for the return of the football director.

Worldwide suspension
Due to the worldwide suspension, Overmars will not be active in Antwerp for the time being, where he will be stationed until mid-2026. In mid-November, the former Ajax player was suspended for two years by the ISR (Institute of Sports Justice) due to his inappropriate behavior in Amsterdam, of which one year was conditional. However, this had little influence on his current work, as he is active in Belgium. Because FIFA immediately takes over the punishment worldwide, Overmars now has to sit on his blisters for a year.

The KNVB has, in accordance with the normal procedure, transferred the national decision of the disciplinary committee to FIFA. Overmars did not appeal against his sentence in the Netherlands, so it was only up to the World Football Association whether the suspension would be adopted globally.

A FIFA spokesperson now tells the NRC that this has indeed happened. “FIFA can confirm that following a request from the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), the FIFA disciplinary committee has decided to make the sanction imposed by the KNVB on Mr Marc Overmars applicable worldwide.”

What is not yet clear is when exactly the suspension will take effect and whether Overmars can appeal. According to the NRC, FIFA no longer responded to those questions. The morning newspaper also approached Antwerp for a response, but the Belgian top club was not yet aware of the ruling on Tuesday afternoon.
