Grenoble Residents Turn Blocked Motorway into Recreational Area Amid Farmers’ Protest

Picnic, cycling, badminton… Among the tractors, a large number of Grenoble residents took their ease on the A480 motorway this weekend. Blocked by farmers since last Thursday, the portion of road located under the Catane bridge in Grenoble (Isère), has been taken over by delighted residents, reports France Bleu Isère.

“Monday evening, we will take stock but we think we will be there at least until Tuesday or Wednesday,” Alexandre Escoffier, vice-president of the FDSEA of Isère, explains to local radio.

Between 50 and 150 farmers are currently mobilized to block the A480 motorway, specifies France Bleu.

“It’s awesome”

Sunday January 28, dozens of curious people took advantage of the blockages to walk on the highway or on the Catania bridge.

For some, it was an opportunity to do a little jogging, a bike ride or even play badminton, as evidenced by numerous photos published on social networks.

Éric Piolle, the city’s environmentalist mayor, joked about the situation on his X account (ex-Twitter): “In Grenoble, we are happy to reveal our new bicycle highways to you!”

“It’s great. Hoping that it will give us some ideas later on to create a scooter and bike path for us. As for the farmers, they are right. As long as it lasts,” another city resident told France Bleu .

In addition to the blockages planned in Gironde or snail operations in Hauts-de-France and the Grand Est, symbolic places will also be targeted, such as the Mayenne tax center.
