Geneva Lions Set Sights on Top Two Finish and Trophy Victory in New Basketball Season

The Geneva Lions want to continue to improve. Objective: finish in the top two at the end of the regular season and win a trophy.

The basketball players of Grand-Saconnex are approaching this new season filled with optimism and ambitions. Priority number one: continue to improve. After their third place the previous year, they want to move up a level, in other words to finish among the first two at the end of the regular season. And win a trophy, something they haven’t managed to do for two years, when – under the leadership of Andrej Štimac – they achieved the Cup-Cup double (Swiss Cup and League Cup/SBL Cup ).

“Oggie” expects a more balanced championship than last season: Friborg Olympic and Massagno remain the favorites for the national title, but should be less dominant than the Lions.

The club’s leaders therefore display their ambitions, but they also ask for patience. The Lions president tells us why.

Just because the Lions want to roar louder this season doesn’t mean they’re going to get their paws on a trophy. Certainly, they have given themselves the means with the arrival of ten new players. The total squad includes fifteen players.

Three of them are over two meters tall.

The foreign players present last season have all left the club. Their replacements constitute real reinforcements.

But their preparation was shortened: four weeks instead of six. A decision not necessarily well understood which led to several problems.

Result: the basketball players of Grand-Saconnex deplore three injuries: Noé Anabir, Mladen Armus and Michael Williams.

Noé Anabir new captain

A new captain has been named: Geneva winger Noé Anabir, trained at the Lions. Who made this decision?

The European dream remains

In the longer term, the Lions cherish the hope of playing in the European Cup.
