Frenkie Montas agrees with the Reds for one year and $16 million

The Reds have agreed to a one-year, $16 million contract with Dominican right-hander Francelis “Frankie” Montás, sources have told MLB.com. The Reds have not confirmed the signing, which depends on the pitcher passing a physical exam to be finalized.

Montás, who will turn 31 in March, is coming off a difficult 2023 season with the Yankees in which he barely pitched due to a right shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery in February. He made just one appearance at the major league level, pitching 1.1 innings of relief in the 161st game of the season.

Montás’ last full season was his breakout campaign in 2021, in which he went 13-9 with a 3.37 earned run average, 1.18 WHIP and 207 strikeouts in 187 innings to finish in sixth place in the voting for the American League Cy Young Award. In 2022, he made 19 starts for the A’s, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings before being traded to the Yankees.
