From this year, former Yakult outfielder Shota Nakayama will play for the Oisix Niigata Albirex Baseball Club, which is joining the NPB second team. He got married after receiving his notification of being out of action, and last year moved to Niigata with his beloved wife, who also served as his “coach.” He aims to return to the NPB using his powerful long-hitting ability.

Nakayama attracted a lot of attention on the popular program “Professional Baseball Team Notification,” which aired at the end of last year. At the 12-team tryout, he hit a powerful shot, and his wife, Aiyumi, watched from the stands as if praying. After being removed from active duty by Yakult, she got married and continued to live in Kumamoto last year, when she played in the independent league Kyushu Asia League “Hi no Kuni Salamanders”.
“I proposed to him. I was worried about how things would turn out as my job was not stable, but he agreed and said, ‘I will continue to support him.’ He was watching me. I thought I had to do my best for this person and make them happy.”
Life in Kumamoto was by no means easy. The income from the independent league was not enough, so Ayumi worked from morning until evening on weekdays to help pay for her living expenses. She said, “Although she made me feel bad, she always acted cheerfully and we were able to overcome it together.” Although she wasn’t able to live the newlywed life she had envisioned, the bond between the two grew stronger.
Although he was an amateur baseball player, he studied on his own and his wife supported him. “She helped me grow spiritually as well.”
Although Aiyumi has no experience in baseball, she is studying on her own by watching baseball instructor X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube for her husband. When she falls into a slump in batting, she gives him advice while watching videos of her that she shot herself. Even right before the tryout, she asked for a practice partner for her and continued to knock, even though her arm was covered in bruises.
“Even though he was not used to it, he worked hard every day.At the beginning of the independent league, I couldn’t hit at all.When I was having a slump, I asked him, “What’s going on here?” and he answered.It made me feel better emotionally. That’s when I started to see results. Up until now (when I was with Yakult), I was only playing baseball for myself, but now it’s different. I’m just doing my best for my wife. I’m also growing mentally. It was given to me.”
I cannot thank my wife enough for her continued support. That’s why I’m determined to fight for my life in my new hometown of Niigata. The two are currently training on their own in preparation for camp-in on February 1st.
The only time I ever showed my wife the NPB uniform was at the tryout. “I’ll be able to repay the favor by wearing the (NPB) uniform in official games. I want to show off my results and appeal to NPB.”
Nakayama has something to protect. For my wife, who also serves as a coach, who has supported me the most. It will be a tough road to return to NPB, but the two will work together to achieve their dreams.
