The challenge in presenting your case to the owners, according to Carroll, was that “they are not football people.”

Carroll shared details of his end-of-season meetings with Allen when he appeared on Seattle Sports 710-AM for the latest installment of his weekly radio show. He said the first goal was to get to the bottom of what happened last season when the Seahawks finished 9-8. and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years.

“And then, what is the essence of the adjustments that are necessary?” Carroll said in a conversation that aired this Friday. “That’s where maybe we disagree, because I see it one way and I think I have a way to fix it.” and I’m not going to fix it halfway; I’m trying to fix it so it’s perfect. I have really precise, specific thoughts, and they may not see that that’s the case, they may not agree with it, they may not see that that’s the right answer or that it’s not the answer that makes them feel good. The difficult part is that, if you could know, it would be very difficult because you are not football people. “They’re not coaches, so getting to the real details is really difficult for other people.”

It’s unclear who, other than Allen and Carroll, was part of those end-of-season meetings.although Bert Kolde is the Seahawks vice president under Allen, who took over the team after his brother, Paul Allen, died in October 2018.

When asked if he had any idea the meetings would play out the way they did, Carroll said he knew he would be challenged.

“Every year it seems like you’re going to be challenged by opinions that are media opinions, because what else do people have when you’re out of the game?” he said. “How could they know other than what they talk about on the radio, what the articles say and what the experts draw conclusions about? That’s why they have to realize that that’s what they’re dealing with and then try to talk through it to get to the essence of things. “That’s always going to be a challenge because when you don’t have people who are legitimate and loyal to football making the decisions, then you have to try to make sense of it, just like we try to make sense of it for your audience, it’s no different.”

General manager John Schneider is leading the search to replace Carroll, who emerges as the winningest coach in franchise history and the only one to lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title. Including the playoffs, his 181 wins are tied for 13th in NFL history.

Carroll said he received hundreds of text messages and phone calls in the wake of Wednesday’s news, and sources range from Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells to political commentator Rachel Maddow.

“I can’t catch up on everything, but I’m working on it,” he said. “It’s really nice and flattering and warm to feel that there’s so much response.”

Carroll said during his farewell news conference Wednesday that details of his advisory role has not yet been discussed. He also made it clear that at 72 years old he still feels he has what it takes to train, something he reiterated on his radio show when asked if he sees himself training again.

“I don’t know,” he replied. “I have a lot of energy, thought and will for it, but I can’t imagine there is a suitable place. I don’t know. I’m open to everything, but it’s not something that takes my breath away. There’s a lot of world out here that I’m excited to challenge and chase. So if that happens, it will happen. We’ll see. I don’t really know what to tell you about that yet.”
