Colorado is adding more experience and talent to its secondary.

On Sunday evening, former Oklahoma State cornerback DJ McKinney announced that he is transferring to CU to play for the Buffaloes and head coach Deion Sanders.

A redshirt freshman this past season for the Cowboys, McKinney wasn’t a starter, but he led all OSU cornerbacks in tackles, with 38 in 14 games. He also had five pass breakups for an OSU team that went 10-4 and won the Texas Bowl.

This year, McKinney played 596 snaps and his pass coverage grade of 70.2 on Pro Football Focus was second among all OSU defensive backs.

In two seasons at OSU, the 6-foot, 174-pound McKinney appeared in 18 games, recording 40 tackles. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Coming out of Colleyville Heritage (Texas) High School in 2022, McKinney was a three-star recruit. He had 21 scholarship offers, including from CU. He chose OSU over Arizona, Missouri and others.

McKinney is the 19th transfer addition of the offseason for CU and the second defensive back, joining former Liberty starter Preston Hodge.

The Buffs also return a lot of talent at corner, led by star Travis Hunter and 2023 five-star recruit Cormani McClain. Omarion Cooper and Carter Stoutmire are among the others slated to return for the Buffs.
