Former Newfoundland and Labrador basketball player files lawsuit against former team over unpaid salary

Newfoundland and Labrador basketball player Carl English is suing the owners of his former team, the Saint-Jean Edge. He alleges he did not receive several payments, including his monthly salary totaling more than $130,000.

The player was named the team’s most valuable player in his first season in 2017 and led his team to the finals in the second season.

In the suit filed in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Carl English claims he did not receive $130,769 that would have been provided for in his contract for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

According to documents filed in court, English alleges that his contract included an initial payment of $30,000, as well as a monthly salary of $5,000 and 50% of the proceeds from the Carl English recognition evening.

He says he received the first payment and the evening’s receipts, but claims not to have received his monthly salary as well as the harmonized sales tax associated with his salary.

He claims interest on the money owed to him. Irwin Simon and Rob Sabbagh, the two co-owners of the team, have not yet filed their defense.

The basketball player did not wish to comment. The team’s former owners did not respond to an interview request.

A return home for English

The player from a small community near Placentia Bay made it to NBA training camps, the national basketball team and the top European championships.

His return to Newfoundland was an event. The Saint-Jean Edge team had attendance records for the league with rooms full of spectators wearing the number 23 jersey emblazoned with the English name.

Carl English also used his influence to bring former NBA champion Glen Big Baby Davis to the club for the 2019 season.

Attendance had dropped during the team’s third season in 2020. The league did not resume following COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
