Former Judo Champion Mourns Wife’s Tragic Death in Kenyan Road Accident

Milan, 5 January 2024 – “Fifty years together vanished in an instant. My wife died instantly, while she was sleeping. And the only thing that comforts me in the midst of this pain is thinking that she didn’t notice anything. It’s hard without her.” Alfredo Vismara75 years old, he is the husband of Antonella Bigliotto79 year old Milanese who lost his life last December 22nd in a road accidentwho has just arrived in Africa together with her spouse, who is a former judo champion and master, who has been active in Kenya for years to help the very young (and not only) thanks to sport.

What exactly happened?

“We had recently arrived at Mombasa airport and were traveling on the transfer that would take us to Malindi, where we would spend the Christmas period in the house we rent. My wife and I were in a large car , an SUV, when at a certain point we crashed into a truck that had braked in front of us. We were more or less halfway, near Kilifi. Perhaps our driver was distracted, because he didn’t even brake. I at that moment I was awake but my eyes were half closed because there was a dazzling light (it’s summer in Kenya at the moment) and I didn’t even realize, at the time, what was happening. I was sitting in the front, the dashboard stuck in my chest and I suffered a severe bruise. The driver, from what I later learned, broke his leg. But unfortunately it was my wife who paid the price, who was sitting in the back and sleeping. She hit her head and she’s gone forever.”

Are you still in Kenya?

“Yes, there are many procedures to take care of to bring the body back to Italy. And then I’m working hard for the gym that I created more than 20 years ago, right in Kenya: the ‘Malindi Judo Club’, in collaboration with the Rotary of Malindi and the Kenyan Judo Federation, supported by the Friends of Judo association, of which I am co-founder, and many other entities. Seeing so many children on the streets, when I came to Kenya for the first time on holiday, I wanted do something for them through sport. Thousands of kids have passed through the Malindi gym. Now there are almost 200 people, including adults, attending it, always free. In Milan I managed a sports center in via Forze Armate, which was closed due to Covid , and now I teach in my brother’s gym, Martial Arts School, in Corso Lodi”.

Did your wife support you?

“Yes, she didn’t teach judo but she always did her best to give me support in every activity. She was my support. Now I can’t think of her without being moved: we met as kids, in the Porta Romana area, and we were together for 50 years old. We had a son, who passed away some time ago. My wife loved Africa, this land is our second home, here we spent the August period together and then the Christmas period. Now this place too, without about her, it’s no longer the same. But I will continue to work hard for her.”
