Adler with confession to Neuer

Manuel Neuer began his career in goal for the DFB at the 2010 World Cup – but only because René Adler was injured shortly before the tournament. The former German number one now reveals the background.

Manuel Neuer – there is a heated discussion between him and his opponent Marc-Andre ter Stegen about the regular place in the German goal at the home European Championship in 2024. And yet the Bayern keeper has been an integral part of the German goal for almost 14 years .

The reason he ended up there at all was due to a serious rib injury suffered by the then number one, René Adler. As the 38-year-old revealed in an interview with kicker, the injury seemed almost self-inflicted – even though he had already won the competition.

The former Leverkusen and HSV keeper said: “My injury was not bad luck, not fate, but my fault. Because, unlike Manu, I couldn’t handle the pressure of being number 1.”

The competition – Adler was injured just two months before the tournament in South Africa – took its toll on him.

Adler: “My ribs broke from the pressure”

The ex-goalkeeper continued: “I lost all looseness and trained too much and too hard. I had two broken ribs without any impact from opponents. Figuratively speaking, my ribs broke from the pressure that is on a German number 1 anyway. But much more to the one I made for myself.”

Neuer, on the other hand, is outstanding at not putting too much pressure on himself, Adler described: “That’s why: If you want to play instead of him, you first have to be mentally at least as good as him.”

Adler himself is now following the DFB team’s performance on TV – but the twelve-time national player has become a television expert himself.
