Fognini, new calf discomfort: ‘Difficult start to the season’

Still calf problems for Fabio Fognini. After having withdrawn from the Australian Open qualifiers due to the muscle problem suffered last December, the Ligurian tennis player returned to the court in recent days at the Challenger in Tenerife, Spain. Out in the second round against the Kazakh Yevseyev, Fognini felt new discomfort in his calf which will have to be evaluated with instrumental tests in Italy. “Hi guys, unfortunately I’m forced to cancel from the next tournament – Fognini wrote on Instagram – I will return to Italy and undergo tests hoping that my calf hasn’t played any tricks and, therefore, to return to the field soon. I appreciate your support in a difficult start to the season for me.”

The top 100 goal

Fognini has canceled himself from the Challenger of Quimper (France), scheduled for next week. However, he is still registered for the Challenger Koblenz (Germany), scheduled from January 29th to February 4th. The physical problem risks slowing down Fognini’s progress towards the goal of returning to the top 100. The 36 year old from Arma di Taggia is currently n. 103 and has been outside the top 100 in the world since April 2023.
