Final stop for Ofner also in doubles

Austrian tennis has not been represented in doubles at the Australian Open since Saturday. Sebastian Ofner lost in the second double round alongside the Frenchman Alexandre Muller to the number eight seeded Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz 2:6 2:6. In the singles, the Styrian lost out after a five-set marathon against the Australian local hero Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who was seeded number two, reached the round of 16 on Saturday against the Chinese Shang Juncheng. However, Alcaraz benefited from his 18-year-old opponent’s abandonment in the third set when the score was 1:6 1:6 0:1. Shang had to sit out due to a thigh injury. Alcaraz will now face Miomir Kecmanovic in a duel for a place in the quarter-finals. The Serb kicked Tommy Paul (USA) out of the competition 6:4 3:6 2:6 7:6 (9/7) 6:0.

With Hubert Hurkacz, number nine is also in the last 16, the Pole lost out to Frenchman Ugo Humbert (No. 21) 3:6 6:1 7:6 (7/4) 6:3. Hurkacz has to deal with Arthur Cazaux. The 21-year-old French wildcard player gave another test of talent against Dutchman Talon Griekspoor 6:3 6:3 6:1.

Zheng wins Chinese duel

In the women’s category, Zheng Qinwen won the Chinese duel with Wang Jafan 6:4 2:6, 7:6 (10/8) and will now face the Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin. The Italian Jasmine Paolini and the Russian Anna Kalinskaja will play another round of 16 match.
