FFF Declines Ivorian Federation’s Request to Entrust Herve Renard With National Team

After an afternoon of reflection, the FFF finally decided, this Thursday afternoon, not to accede to the request of the Ivorian Federation, wishing to entrust Hervé Renard with the fate of his selection which must face Senegal, champion in title, Monday evening (9 p.m.), in the round of 16 of the CAN, as revealed by L’Équipe this Thursday.

This outcome is not really a surprise, as the Ivorian demand seemed astonishing. From the start, Philippe Diallo and Jean-Michel Aulas, respectively president and vice-president of the FFF, had no intention of following up on this request. But they still took the time to think so as not to give the feeling of blocking too quickly the coach of the French women’s team who was eager to succeed Jean-Louis Gasset by carrying out this freelance with an Ivorian selection whom he has coached in the past. Discussions also took place with the Ivorian Federation, but they were unsuccessful.

Winner of the CAN with Zambia (2012) then with Ivory Coast (2015), former coach of Morocco (2016-2019), Renard knows perfectly all the teams still in competition, their strengths and weaknesses. But he will therefore not try to revive an Ivorian team that is a little in distress after a disappointing first round marked by a scathing defeat against Equatorial Guinea (0-4). And who will have to do without him.
