FC Bayern’s Women Narrowly Miss Qualification for Champions League Quarter-Finals

In the top game against Paris, FC Bayern’s women experienced ups and downs. In the end, the Munich women narrowly failed to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Bayern Munich’s footballers already failed in the group stage of the Champions League. The German champions only managed a 2-2 (1-0) draw in the decisive final group game against Paris St. Germain despite being twice ahead and missed the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2017/18 season. Georgia Stanway (88th) became a tragic figure for Munich with an own goal.

National player Giulia Gwinn (36th) and Sydney Lohmann (75th) had given Bayern the lead twice, and only a win would have helped them advance. But Tabitha Chawinga (73′) and Stanway equalized for the guests.

The last German team is out

After VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, this is the last German team to be eliminated from the premier class. For the first time since the introduction of the Women’s Champions League in the 2001/02 season, no Bundesliga club is in the last eight.

In a tough game, Bayern got into the game better after a good 30 minutes. After mostly lacking precision and creativity, coach Alexander Straus’ team created several good chances in the minutes before half-time – and were rewarded with the deserved lead thanks to Gwinn’s header.

After the restart, PSG also became more active. However, in what was now a faster-paced game, Bayern continued to fight back passionately and didn’t let the equalizer put them off track. Almost in direct response, Lohmann headed in to make it 2-1, but Stanway’s own goal hit the Munich women’s hearts late on.
