Move to FC Bayern? Nordi Mukiele’s perspective
After a strong 2021/22 season at RB Leipzig, Mukiele, then 24 years old, wanted to take the next step in his career. The fact that PSG came knocking probably made the decision a little easier for him, after all, Mukiele grew up in the Paris metropolitan region.
“Playing for the club from your hometown is of course a dream,” Mukiele said to the PSG website after his move. “I’m really happy to have landed here after a lot of hard work.”
A year and a half later, however, it must be noted that his time at PSG so far has been anything but ideal for the defensive man. After a few weeks of start-up time, Mukiele earned a regular place in the league at least temporarily in his debut season and was often in the starting line-up of then coach Christophe Galtier between the beginning of October 2022 and the beginning of January 2023.
In the important Champions League games, he mostly sat on the bench at that time. And in mid-January 2023, Mukiele was slowed down by a thigh injury, which caused him to miss more or less the rest of the season.
Mukiele’s situation has not improved in the current round. His starting eleven appearances were mainly on the rather unusual left side of the defense, where he helped out so that coach Luis Enrique could give Lucas Hernández his breaks. In total, the ex-Leipziger currently only makes ten appearances in 2023/24, and he was on the bench for 90 minutes in five of the last six competitive games.
This is of course a very unsatisfactory situation for Mukiele. Especially since he would probably be happy to recommend himself for France’s European Championship squad, which is only possible with a lot of playing time. So far there is one senior international match in Mukiele’s CV, which he played when he was with Leipzig in September 2021.
Mukiele may also have greater opportunities to play in the second half of the season at PSG, where he is under contract until 2027 – at least in phases.
