“If Guirassy is on the market, you would buy it in the summer”

Thomas Müller belongs to FC Bayern “like the Frauenkirche to Munich,” says club president Hainer. Müller now looks back on the negotiations of his new contract. At the home World Cup in the summer, he is relying on the summer fairy tale effect.

Thomas Müller gave insights into how his contract extension with his heart club FC Bayern was going. The bottom line is that it was more or less a no-brainer. In short: Müller felt good, as did his club with the personnel, so a new working paper was signed shortly before Christmas. To put it in the words of Thomas Müller: “The thing with FC Bayern and me is simply a well-rounded thing.”

This is how he outlined it in his recently published newsletter. “In the summer and fall I felt that I could still rely on my body. So the decision was made for me to play another year,” said the 34-year-old striker. He loves “competition and the will to win is just as strong as it ever was. “It was all the better for me that I had discussions with FC Bayern before the winter break and we extended my contract for another year.”

After Herbert Hainer’s ode, everything else was almost unthinkable. Müller “belongs to FC Bayern like the Frauenkirche belongs to Munich. “He was born just outside the city, grew up in this club and became a legend during his playing days – very few people can do that,” said the Munich club president and supervisory board chairman. Müller’s “path into the history books” is paved with records: “FC Bayern has been shaped by many personalities, and there will never be a player like Thomas Müller again.”

In numbers this means, among other things: 455 Bundesliga games alone with 145 goals and 202 assists, plus 147 games in the Champions League (53 goals, 33 assists) or 65 DFB Cup games (34 goals, 26 assists).

The 2025 Champions League final was Müller’s motivation

Müller came to Bayern in 2000 when he was almost ten years old from the village club TSV Pähl. His breakthrough with the professionals came in the 2009/2010 season under coach Louis van Gaal. He once said about the storm jewel: “Müller is always playing.”

For Müller himself, it was great motivation to be able to play the Champions League final in Munich again in 2025 – and possibly win again. He has already succeeded in doing this twice (2013 and 2020). “With the Bavarian soul, it is a dream and a realizable one. We don’t have to play the lottery for it.”

Müller emphasized that the negotiations on a new contract were “characterized by mutual appreciation”. For him, it was “additionally liberating that my sporting future has already been clarified and I can put my full focus on football.”

This year, in addition to FC Bayern, it naturally also includes the national team. Müller sees the home European Championship in the summer as a chance for a “really good football festival” and has great hope for the support of his own fans. He “would think it would be cool if we as a nation managed to look forward to this awesome football tournament in our own country. We have the chance to present ourselves as great hosts and to celebrate a really good football festival together.”

The 126-time national player also remembered the 2006 World Cup in Germany, which he experienced as a fan. “It was absolutely magical.” In terms of sport, the 2014 world champion sees the tournament in his own country as a great opportunity for the recently struggling national team. “We have the chance to show ourselves much better than in recent years. We are rightly not considered one of the top favorites at the moment. Maybe – like in 2006 – we can start the tournament positively and then grow with the support of the German audience.”
