Falcons to hire former head coach Raheem Morris as new head coach

According to sources, Atlanta will ask back the assistant, the same one who had interim commands before Arthur Smith

Los Falcons plan to hire Raheem Morris as his coach, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN on Thursday, making Morris the first former head coach of the NFL that the owner of the Falcons, Arthur Blankhires in his more than 20 years as an owner.

The hiring of Morris comes after an extensive search that included 14 candidates, including former coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichickthe former coach of the Tennessee Titans, Mike Vrabeland the former coach of Michigan, Jim Harbaughwho was hired Wednesday as coach of Los Angeles Chargers.

Raheem Morris He was one of four coaches who had a second interview with the team. The others were Belichick, the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, Bobby Slowikand the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers, Ejiro Evero. Now, after three years and Smith being fired, they are bringing Morris back in as a full-time coach.

Morris, 47, spent the last three seasons as defensive coordinator for Los Angeles Ramsincluding a Super Bowl victory with the Rams in 2021.

This will be Morris’ second stint as a full-time head coach at the NFL. Previously it was Tampa Baywhere he went 17-31 in three seasons, from 2009 to 2011.

Raheem Morris then went to Washington as defensive backs coach from 2012 to 2014 before his first stint with the Falconsfirst as defensive passing game coordinator in 2015 and then receivers coach from 2016 to 2019, in addition to being assistant head coach of Atlanta.

He was named defensive coordinator of the Falcons in 2020 and was promoted to interim head coach after Quinn’s firing.

He will replace Smith, who was fired after three seasons in which he went 21-30. Morris inherits defense that includes second-team All-Pro safety Jessie Bates III, the corner AJ Terrellly the defensive lineman Grady Jarrett. Morris grew up in New Jersey and then played college football at Hofstra on Long Island, where he began his career as an assistant. He went to Cornell as defensive backs coach in 1999 before returning to Hofstra as defensive backs coach from 2000 to 2001, then had his first stint in the NFL as a defensive assistant with the Buccaneers.

After Morris settles in, his first order of business will be to resolve the quarterback situation. Taylor Heinicke y Desmond Ridder remain on the roster, but Blank called the quarterback position “poor,” and it was one of the reasons that led to Smith’s dismissal.
