Last weekend there was a new day of the 2023/2024 School Sports Calendar organized by the Provincial Council of Albacete. Chess, track athletics, paddle tennis and orienteering were the modalities held in Albacete, Higueruela, Montealegre del Castillo and Ontur.

The Local Chess Phase held its first three rounds at the Vereda Pavilion, in Albacete, in a competition organized thanks to the collaboration of the Chess Federation of Castilla-La Mancha. More than 250 schoolchildren participated in the Promotion, Children and Cadet categories, representing the Albacete, Excalibur, Parque Sur, AMPA Valdeganga and La Felipa clubs.

The Albacete Athletics Tracks hosted the first provincial day of the School Age Sports Track Winter Athletics Championship, thanks to the collaboration of the Castilla-La Mancha Athletics Federation and the support of the Albacete City Council, through the Municipal Sports Institute. In this competition, tests of 50 meters, 60 meters, 200 meters, 500 meters, 600 meters, 800 meters, 1,000 meters, high jump, long jump and discus throw were held, with athletes arriving from various parts of the province divided by categories, from Sub 8 to Sub 18.

Paddle returned to the School Sports calendar thanks to the Castilla-La Mancha Paddle Federation. And it did so with resounding success and a considerable increase in participation. Initially the test was going to be held in Higueruela, but the high number of registered participants led Montealegre del Castillo to also host meetings as a support location.

Higueruela hosted the male juvenile category, with the participation of 15 couples, intense matches and a great sporting atmosphere. Fernando Molina and Alejandro were the winners, beating Aurelio Tobarra and Álvaro García in the final. The rest of the categories were held in Montealegre del Castillo. In the female juvenile, the champions were Irene Hernández and Carolina Vizcaíno, with Alicia Yáñez and Daniela Cuenca as runners-up. In the women’s children’s competition, Aitana Martínez and Laura Martínez won, with Carla Abellán and Isabel Guerrero in second position. Juan Martínez and Ángel Egido won the children’s male category over Iván Villaescusa and Juan Milan. In men’s cadet the champions were Sergio Ramos and Álvaro Martínez, and the runners-up Pedro Tortosa and Aitor López. Councilor Soraya Pina participated in the presentation of awards to the winners.

Ontur hosted the second test of the Provincial School Age Orienteering Championship, organized thanks to the collaboration of the Castilla-La Mancha Orienteering Federation, with the support of the town council and the organizing club, the Club Ingenioso Hidalgo GODIH Albacete. An urban circuit, perfectly signposted, hosted this competition in which more than 300 participants gathered, highlighting the high female participation, which was even higher than the male participation.
