FC Bayern Munich needs new players to meet the demands of the Champions League. How difficult this is is not only shown by the transfer of English central defender Eric Dier.

On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano, the Italian football information dealer, reported that FC Bayern’s first offer for a player from abroad had been rejected. It wasn’t about Eric Dier, the defender from England, more on that in a moment. It wasn’t about any of the other candidates who, if they come, will ensure that the German champions’ chances of winning in the Bundesliga and Champions League increase in the next few weeks and months. It was about Jonah Kusi-Asare, a striker from Sweden who has never played in the Bundesliga or the Champions League in his footballing life – there is a good reason for this: he is only 16 years old.

If you want to describe FC Bayern’s situation in January 2024, it’s not about whether this boy from Sweden will play in Munich at some point. The point is that he is one of the players who is not yet good enough for the Champions League, but could be good enough for the Champions League. And so he is one of the players that the Austrian Christoph Freund, 46 years old, is looking for – and finds more often than most men in the football industry.
