Eintracht Frankfurt: Women lose 0-2 in Barcelona

The Eintracht Frankfurt footballers missed the quarter-finals of the Champions League early. Coach Niko Arnautis’ team missed a surprise at FC Barcelona on Thursday evening and lost 0-2 (0-1) to the defending champions. Captain Patri Guijarro (19th minute) and Caroline Hansen (73rd) scored for the selection of world footballer Aitana Bonmatí.

The Frankfurt team can no longer push Benfica Lisbon out of second place in Group A on the final matchday against FC Rosengard/Sweden next Wednesday. Barcelona landed their fifth win in their fifth game and have so far only conceded one goal this premier class season from Eintracht national striker Laura Freigang in a 3-1 defeat in the first leg.

In front of 4,842 spectators at the Estadi Johan Cruyff – including 300 Eintracht fans who had traveled with them – the Frankfurt team had to chase a lot, but initially gave up few chances. After a mistake in the build-up to the game, the score was 0-1. After half an hour, Arnautis also had to take the injured Géraldine Reuteler off the pitch.

After the break, Cara Bösl replaced Stina Johannes, who had recently had a cold, in the Frankfurt goal and immediately saved against Bonmati. Lucy Bronze then headed onto the post. Freigang missed the best chance for the Hessians in the 57th minute before Hansen scored.

The Eintracht women, from whom Tanja Pawollek also had to leave with a knee injury, lost the quarter-finals with a 0-1 and a 1-1 draw against Lisbon.

German champions FC Bayern Munich still have a chance of progressing against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. Last year’s finalist VfL Wolfsburg missed the group stage.
