DKC Dominates in Dutch Badminton Eredivisie, Secures Spot in Finals

You have the news, we have a little bit!

The Hague formation defeated bottom team Smashing 1-7 in the final round of the Dutch Badminton Eredivisie. That was more than enough for the leader to retain first place in the regular competition, securing a direct ticket for the final battle on March 23.

At DKC they knew prior to the last match that very crazy things would have to happen to miss out on a direct ticket for the final battle. Coach Dennis Lens’ team should have drawn at Smashing and number two Almere had to take full advantage (eight points) at VELO. Despite the fact that DKC leader Mark Caljouw and Flora Wang were unable to participate, the final spot was never in danger in Wijchen.

DKC had few problems in the starting doubles. Gijs Duijs / Michiel Kruijt and Alyssa Tirtosentono / Jaymie Laurens were clearly a size too big for their opponents. Both couples won their match in two games. The same happened with the men’s singles. Joran Kweekel and Kruijt were too strong for Teun Gootzen and Yannic Smeets respectively.

The only defeat for the people of The Hague came from substitute Liselotte van Baalen in her single against Maureen Zeewald. Laurens then gave DKC a 1-5 lead with a regular win over Leonie Rovers. With the help of Andy Buijk, Van Baalen managed to win the mixed doubles. In an exciting three-game match, Gootzen and Sterre Bang were treated to a defeat. Kweekel and Tirtosentono also had some difficulty with Timo Poos and Rovers. They did win twice 22-20. This is how the 1-7 final score was on the scoreboard.

DKC thus qualified for the Dutch Badminton Eredivisie final for the sixth time in club history, after 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2023. It only managed to convert the 2015 final into a win. So it is time for that second national title.

It remains to be seen who DKC will meet in the final. The opponent comes from the semi-final between number two Almere (one-time national champion in 2020) and number three Drop Shot (three-time national champion in 1958, 1960 and 1962), also from The Hague. As mentioned, the final will be played on Saturday, March 23. The place of action is the Maaspoort in Den Bosch.
