Just three days after the 1:2 against FC St. Pauli, Fortuna Düsseldorf has a historic opportunity in the DFB Cup against Hamburg. For the first time in 28 years, Fortuna can reach a cup semi-final again. On Tuesday there will be a quarter-final duel between the two top teams in the second division in St. Pauli.
Economically, a Düsseldorf victory would be worth its weight in gold. Reaching the semi-finals would be rewarded with a bonus of around 3.5 million euros. “That is an exorbitantly high sum for any second division team and would be a nice side effect,” said sports director Christian Weber.
On Saturday in the league, the second division leaders were still a bit too big for Fortuna, who could, however, rely on two additions. The Rhinelanders signed two additional loan players in attacker Marlon Mustapha and defender Joshua Quarshie.
The two-time cup winners from Düsseldorf last reached the semi-finals in 1996. At that time, the Fortunes were eliminated 0-2 at Karlsruher SC.
