On a delicate mission: As the new coach of 1. FC Köln, Timo Schultz has to rely on youth. The dimension of the task is explained by the club’s recent past.

At least in terms of atmosphere, a lot has changed in one fell swoop at Geißbockheim, where Timo Schultz spent his first day as head coach of 1. FC Köln on Thursday. During the previous two and a half years, Steffen Baumgart, who was very warm but always a bit grumpy and rarely smiled, was there, so Schultz’s good mood was actually something new.

It was fitting that Christian Keller emphasized the nature of the new coach in his first statement that morning. The 46-year-old East Frisian brings “the personality and competence to raise the performance potential of our team,” said the sports director and explained: “Let’s do it together with Timo Schultz with full conviction and total dedication in all areas fields of action. Then we will be able to stay in the league.”
