Defeat in Barcelona: No wonder – Eintracht Women fail in the Champions League group phase

As of: January 25, 2024 10:55 p.m

The Eintracht Frankfurt women are doing well against the big FC Barcelona. But they cannot prevent the defeat and the early exit from the Champions League. Three injuries are particularly painful.

The Eintracht Frankfurt women missed the miracle they were aiming for at FC Barcelona on Thursday (January 25, 2024). Coach Niko Arnautis’ team showed a committed performance against the reigning Champions League winners. The 0-2 defeat sealed the early exit from the group phase. The goals were scored by Patri Guijarro (19th) and Caroline Graham Hansen (73rd).

Frankfurt held on with a lot of effort in their first competitive game of the year. Laura Freigang (57th) had the best chances with a beautiful right-footed shot and Lara Prasnikar (68th) with a volley. The lackluster Barça players lacked consistency on offense for a long time.

Trio has to go out injured

Bitter for Eintracht, who can no longer push Benfica Lisbon out of second place on the last match day: three players, Geraldine Reuteler, Stina Johannes and Tanja Pawollek, were replaced injured.

Since Benfica had already scored a point against Swedish representatives FC Rosengard (2-2) before the Frankfurt game, it was clear that the Hessians had to win against Barça to have a minimal chance of reaching the quarter-finals. A mammoth task that ultimately could not be achieved.

FC Barcelona – Eintracht Frankfurt 2:0 (1:0)
