Representatives of the Cuban Professional Baseball Federation (FEPCUBE) announced this December 29 the preselection of athletes called for the team that will represent Cuba in the Intercontinental Series of Colombia, which will be held from January 25 to February 1.
According to reports in networksthe team, which is called FEPCUBE “Patria y Vida”, received the “yes I want” from numerous Cuban stars of winter baseball and Major League Baseball (MLB), such as Aroldis Chapman, Aledmis Díaz and the brothers Yuli and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., among others.
“Many emotions were experienced today in our presentation of the free Cuban team. Responding, as El Duke himself said: The flag and the anthem go with the team, since they belong to all of us born in Cuba,” they said from the institution.
The preselection of the “Patria y Vida” baseball team is made up so far of 15 pitchers, 11 infielders, three catchers and seven outfielders. The final cut will be made later, although training will begin on January 6.
This Intercontinental Series will bring together teams from Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Curacao, United States, Indonesia and Colombia.

Orlando “Duque” Hernández, executive director of FEPCUBE, explained the reason why players who have participated in international tournaments under the auspices of the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) will not be admitted.
“We respect the federations of each country, therefore we will not call athletes who are part of the national teams of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua or other countries,” he assured.
These are the names of the preselected: catchers Edgar Quero, JC Escarra and Harold Vázquez, and infielders Aledmys Díaz, Alay Lago, Albert Lara, Alex de Goti, Alejandro Rivero, Josuán Hernández, Lázaro Rivera, Luis Avilés Junior, Rangerl Ravelo , Yandy Díaz and Yuli Gurriel.
The outfielders are Henry Urrutia, Lourdes Gurriel Junior, Peter O’Brien, Leonys Martín, Andy Martín, Jorge Soler and Sergio Barthelemy.
The pitchers are Aroldis Chapman, Yennier Cano, Cionel Perez, Daysbel Hernandez, Odrisamer Despaigne, Jorge Martinez, Yoanner Negrin, Jesus Balaguer, Pedro Echemendi, William Gaston, Raidel Orta, Yuniesky Maya, Yordan Nodal, Yusniel Padron and Edilberto Oropesa.
