Closer to the Top: Alcaraz Gains Ground on Djokovic in ATP Standings

Despite his loss to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz has cut 1,870 points from Novak Djokovic on the first tour of the year to the Antipodes. The Murcian adds 400 points from the great quarterfinals while Djokovic subtracts 1,470 points by not defending either the Adelaide titles or the Australian Open.

The title is worth Jannik Sinner to stay 455 points behind Daniil Medvedevwho will continue to close the ATP podium but increasingly closer to Alcaraz.

Before starting the ‘major’ he was 1,300 points behind Murcia and this Monday he will be at 490 points. The Russian, however, has to go in the months of February and March to defend 2,850 points as the winner in 2023 of Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami, in addition to being a finalist in Indian Wells. Carlitos, for his part, defends 1,910 points as of February 12, the day the Buenos Aires Open 250 begins.

The pupil of Juan Carlos Ferrero will be exempt from the initial round as first seed and has to win four games to retain the crown in the Argentine capital.

Four players for the world title

The race for number one is more open than ever, especially because Djokovic left his schedule up in the air and his return to official competition, which under normal conditions should have been at the Dubai Open 500 (February 26 to March 2).

This is how the ATP ranking looks like

Novak Djokovic 9.855

Carlos Alcaraz 9,255

Daniil Medvedev 8.765
