Championing Rising EFL Football Stars: Ronnie Edwards, Dean Lewington, and Ian Callaghan

Allan Brown champions Peterborough United’s young star player, Robert Gifford hails MK Dons’ record-breaker and Mike Pender celebrates a World Cup winner

Your list of young football players (From Bellingham to Wharton: 10 rising EFL stars to look out for in 2024, 28 December) had a glaring omission: 20-year-old Ronnie Edwards of Peterborough United, who has captained the England Under-20s. It is rumoured that several Premiership sides and teams from Europe are interested in signing him. We at Posh have the pleasure of watching our “Rolls-Royce Ronnie” in action each week and will be sad to see him go, but hope he is destined for better things.

• It’s not a story that you covered, but a football record was set at MK Dons on Boxing Day: Dean Lewington played his 771st game for the club – an EFL record that is unlikely to be broken again.

• Sir Bobby Charlton’s obituary (repeated in shortened form in the print edition of 29 December) said that he was the only English player to win the FA Cup, Football League, European Cup and World Cup. In fact, he shares that distinction with Ian Callaghan of Liverpool. Although he did not play in the 1966 World Cup final, Callaghan was a member of the squad and received a winner’s medal, albeit not until 2009 after Fifa changed their rules, which had restricted the award of medals to those who played in the final.
