Chaim Bloom Joins Cardinals as Advisor to President of Baseball Operations

Chaim Bloom has landed his next baseball job.

The former Red Sox chief baseball officer was hired Monday as an advisor to Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

Mozeliak had hinted that St. Louis might bring in outside help for the front office during the November winter meetings.

“I have known Chaim for a long time and think this is a great opportunity for the St. Louis Cardinals,” Mozeliak said in a statement. “It would be nice to get an outside perspective on our organization from someone as respected as Chaim. Having a fresh look at all aspects of our baseball operations should be helpful.

Bloom had served as Boston’s director of baseball from 2019 to 2023, when he was fired in mid-September after the Red Sox fell out of the playoff race.

The baseball executive helped build the 2021 roster that went to the ALCS, but the Red Sox finished in last place in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and again in 2022.

Boston was tied for last in the AL East with the Yankees when they dropped Bloom and ultimately finished the season at the bottom of the standings.

During his five years with the Red Sox, Bloom’s teams went 351-340.

“I am excited to join the Cardinals and be a part of this great organization,” Bloom said in a press release. “Mo and his team have given me a very warm welcome and I look forward to building relationships here and learning, contributing and helping us win.”

The Cardinals are coming off a season in which they fell far short of their goals, finishing 79-91.

The Cardinals added starter Sonny Gray this offseason, signing the right-handed pitcher to a three-year, $75 million contract during an otherwise quiet winter.

The front office and manager Oliver Marmol remain in place, and St. Louis is looking for help to get back into a position like it was in 2022.

Bloom brings a wealth of experience, not only from his time with the Red Sox, but also from his 15 years with the Rays, with whom he had been with since 2005, when he started as an intern.
