Celta knocks out Valencia led by De la Torre and Douvikas and goes to the quarterfinals

Celta de Vigo, with a nice initial goal from Luca De la Torre and a double from Anastasios Douvikas, knocked out Valencia this Wednesday to advance to quarterfinals Copa del Rey after a game in which the Vigo team knew how to take advantage of their chances and withstood the push of the locals, who got into the game with Pepelu’s penalty goal.

While the Valencian fans were singing “Mestalla wants the Cup” in the first minutes of the game, Pepelu centered a ball into the area that Paulista finished off with a header that went slightly wide. It was only minute two, but the locals were eager. They came out intense from the beginning.

The ball lasted very little for Celta and every time he managed to get close to Jaume Doménech’s area his intentions were stopped by the black and white defense, but, little by little, Rafa Benítez’s team managed to jump the line of pressure of his former player’s team, Rubén Baraja.

The Vigo team did not waste a serious error following a corner from Jaume whose clearance fell perfectly to Kevin, who headed into the area where De la Torre, with his back turned, defined with a heel to make the first with great genius.

The right wing became the worst nightmare for the locals with an insistent Miguel Rodríguez who, in one of his entrances to the area, was knocked down by Diego López. De Burgos Bengoechea did not hesitate and decreed penalty. Douvikas tricked Jaume and put distance.

He Valencia He was going through his worst moment not only because of the result, but because of the sensations. Baraja’s team seemed without tension: they did not take possession of even a rebound, they did not win any duels, they were lost and their midfield did not function as usual.

But, after an intervention by Doménech turned into a handball goalkeeper after a cross shot from Douvikas, Valencia found themselves with a penalty from Domínguez for handball. Pepelu stood in front of Iván Villar and beat him with a shot to the center.

The game seemed different. The Valencians cornered Celta in the area, but the Vigo team held on impassively. On the brink of half-time, Valencia had multiple chances saved by Williot Swedberg on the line.

The second part began with high voltage. Celta wanted to sleep the game and Valencia, who came on board with Canós, wanted to revolutionize it. The locals insisted with a shot from Pepelu and a shot from Diego López that Villar solved and with Jesús Vázquez, who sent high a play masterfully woven by Diego López, Pepelu and Fran Pérez.

‘Pipo’ Baraja brought on Gayà, Guillamón and Yaremchuk in search of an equalizer and Benitez brought on Manu Sánchez and Mingueza to further shield his team and, if possible, be more forceful in the pressure.

The Valencian coach’s plan was close to working after a cross from Gayà to Yaremchuk, whose shot hit a defender and was saved by a stretched Villar but, with ten minutes remaining, Celta sealed the tie with a shot from Douvikas that went into the entire squad to qualify the Vigo team to the quarterfinals.
