Carmen Valero, the first Spanish Olympic athlete, dies after suffering a stroke

At only 17 years old, she was proclaimed Spanish champion in the 1,500 meters and, at 21, she participated in the Montreal Games.

Carmen Valerothe first Spanish athlete to participate in some Olympic Games, died this Monday at the age of 68 after suffering a stroke. He started in athletics with coach Josep Molins in 1969 in the Joventut Atltica de Sabadell.

She was proclaimed Spanish youth champion in 1970 and 1971, won eight Spanish Championships in the absolute category, fifteen Spanish Track Championships and was the Spanish record holder in the 800, 1500 and 3000 meters. Well ahead of her time, she is part of the history of national sports for being the first woman from Spain to participate in the Olympic Games. Go to Montreal 1976 at only 21 years old, and competed in the 800 and 1500 events. She was also consecutive world cross country champion, in Chepstow 1976 and Dsseldorf 1977, and third in Rabat 1975.

The International Athletics Federation recognized her as the best Spanish athlete of the 20th century. An example of her great contribution to sport and, above all, to athletics during a time when women did not have a prominent role in these disciplines.
