Carles Falcón: Dakar Rally claims its next fatality

Spanish motorcycle rider Carles Falcón has died after crashing during the second stage of the Dakar Rally. The race management announced this on the X platform, formerly Twitter, and his team Twintrail Racing on Instagram on Monday.

The 45-year-old had a serious fall on January 7th at a speed of around 80 kilometers per hour on the stage between Al Henakijah and Al Duwadimi in Saudi Arabia.

His head hit the ground hard, Spanish media reported. According to the Dakar Rally, Falcón was quickly treated by the medical team and initially taken to a hospital in Al Duwadimi.

From there he was transported to a hospital in Riyadh and flown to his home country of Spain a few days later. He died there in a hospital. Falcón had already taken part in the 2022 Dakar Rally. He was considered an experienced pilot.

The rally has claimed more than 70 lives since it was first held in 1979. Last year, a spectator died when he was run over by a car.
