Car production and exports close 2023 near pre-pandemic levels – El Sol de México

Production and exports of Mexican light vehicles closed 2023 close to the levels recorded prior to the pandemic, Inegi reported this Tuesday.

Last year, 3.7 million light cars were assembled in the country, which represented an increase of 14.23 percent compared to 2022 and the best result in the industry in four years.

The figure was just 0.83 percent below the level reached in 2019, prior to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis that led the industry to stop production the following year.

Among the automakers in Mexico that increased their production at an annual rate at the end of 2023 were BMW, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Ford and Volkswagen.

On the contrary, Toyota, KIA, General Motors and Audi closed the year with declines in unit manufacturing.

Regarding the export of cars made in the country, an increase of 15.19 percent was recorded at an annual rate to close 2023 with 3.3 million units sent abroad, mainly to the United States.

The result was 2.58 percent lower than that recorded in 2019, the year before the pandemic, according to the Inegi report.
