Doha

The Vietnam national team is the first to lift its suitcase from the 2023 Asian Cup. The Golden Star sent home by Indonesia who silenced them on the second matchday. Bye bye!

Indonesia achieved an important victory in the 2023 Asian Cup, Friday (19/1/2024) evening WIB. Garuda beat Vietnam 1-0 at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.

Asnawi Mangkualam scored Indonesia’s goal from the penalty spot in the first half. Vietnam played with 10 men after Le Thanh Long received a second yellow card at the end of the second half.

This victory brought Indonesia up to third place in Group D standings with 3 points. Marselino Ferdinan cs’ points tally equaled Japan above them.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is certain to be eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup. Philippe Troussier’s troops locked the bottom of the standings without winning points in two matches.

It could be said that the last match between Vietnam and Iraq was no longer influential. If Vietnam wins over Iraq and Indonesia loses to Japan on the last matchday, then the standings will remain unchanged.

Based on the 2023 Asian Cup rules, if there are teams with the same points, then the consideration taken is head to head (H2H). Vietnam has lost to Indonesia and Japan and can no longer surpass their second position.

“Indonesia needs points against Japan on Wednesday to be in the knockout phase, while Vietnam will play for pride against Iraq, who have already qualified,” wrote the official 2023 Asian Cup website.

Vietnam defender, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, really regretted his team’s defeat to Indonesia. According to him, the players should appear more spartan on the field.

“Today I am very sad and regretful. The Vietnam team played very well in the second half but the goals still haven’t reached the team. I feel very sad,” said Viet Anh after the Vietnam vs Indonesia match, as reported by Bongda24h.

“Before this match, the goal set by all the players was to get 3 points. However, the team failed to achieve this goal. I think in the near future we have to continue to try hard in the match,” he explained.
