Bundesliga 19th matchday – Sunday: Dortmund defeats Bochum, Berlin scores important points against relegation

Borussia Dortmund – VfL Bochum 3:1 (1:1)

In the third game of the year, Borussia Dortmund achieved their third win. In the small district derby, the guests from Bochum put up a good fight, but ultimately lost 1:3 (1:1). Dortmund moves past RB Leipzig in the table and is back in a Champions League place. Bochum suffered its first defeat in 2024.

Dortmund took the lead early on with a penalty: after a foul by VfL keeper Manuel Riemann, Niclas Füllkrug (7th) converted safely. But Bochum continued to play courageously offensively and came close to equalizing. Shortly before the break, it was Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck (45th) who brought the score to half-time with an own goal.

After the restart, Dortmund continued to struggle, but Bochum even had the chance to take the lead. In a lively final phase with chances on both sides, Dortmund took the decisive action. First, Füllkrug scored again with a header from close range (72nd), before setting the final point shortly before the end with the second foul penalty (90th + 1).

1. FC Union Berlin – SV Darmstadt 98 1:0 (0:0)

Union Berlin achieved an important victory against Darmstadt 98 in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. The Berliners won their home game against the bottom of the table 1-0 (0-0). This means Union’s lead over last place in the table increases to six points. Darmstadt remains in last place with twelve Bundesliga games without a win in a row.

The first half was largely slow at first. Berlin was more active overall, but often played too imprecisely. It was only after a good half hour that there was some danger of scoring on both sides, but the score remained 0-0 at the break.

Shortly after the restart, Benedict Hollerbach initially missed a chance while standing free in front of the Darmstadt goal. But after an hour it was Hollerbach again who scored the goal of the day at the second attempt (62′). In the final phase, Union could have extended their lead, but on the other hand, Klaus Gjasula missed Darmstadt’s chance to equalize.
